□ Name: Fon Master Ion
□ Series: Tales of the Abyss
□ Canon point: After Akzeriuth falls.
□ History:
Ion was created through fomicry as the last of seven replicas to replace the original Fon Master Ion, who was very ill and soon to die...as the Score had said he would die at age twelve. As the closest in overall abilities to the original, and despite the frailty of his body from being a replica and the Fon Master's failing health, he inherited the name Ion and was chosen to be his replacement with the original's death only known by a select few within the Order of Lorelei.

As he had none of the original's memories, his life beginning the day he was created, it can be assumed that the earliest part of his life was spent educating him enough that he could be a passable substitute for Ion. This would involve a lot of the knowledge granted to higher ranking members of the Order and the existence of Yulia City and their beliefs, as well as historical knowledge from the Order and about its founding. He also learned about the Fon Master's abilities and Daathic fonic artes, Daathic Seals and other knowledge exclusive to the Fon Master...though he wasn't taught everything so that he could only do so much.

Among the things he didn't do was reading the Closed Score, which he later thinks would have affected his decisions and let him know who Luke was during their first meeting. He also would have had to learn the basics of living as a human being in general in this short time.

During this time he was also assigned Anise Tatlin as his Fon Master Guardian and constant companion in place of the original's guardian, Arietta...though he was unaware that Anise was there for another purpose as well. Still as his guardian and constant companion, she became the most important person in his life and is very special to him...even when being overprotective and doting. He has absolute faith in her abilities and just as a person.

As time passed, he learned that Grand Maestro Mohs was trying to start a war between Malkuth and Kimlasca, and he began to try to form a reformist faction within the Order to oppose him and keep the peace...also opposing the belief the Score needed to be blindly followed. He escaped Mohs' custody with help from Colonel Jade Curtiss of the Malkuth military and was later asked by the Malkuth Emperor, Peony the Ninth, to act as a go-between to help form a new peace treaty between the kingdom of Kimlasca and the Malkuth empire before a war could start from the already present conflicts.

While riding the Tartarus, a giant landship, to Engeve to wait for a letter, they witnessed a hyperesonance coming from the direction of Baticul. Then, the next day there was a brief detour to chase some thieves, called the Black Wings, who fled across Rotelro Bridge before destroying it to prevent pursuit.

While stopped in Engeve a short time after, Ion learned that the village's food was being stolen and most of the villagers were extremely on edge. Curious and concerned, he inspected the storehouse and found some cheagle fur there, indicating the sacred monsters were likely the thieves. Upon going to report it to Rose, the village leader, he found a couple passing through...one of whom was being accused of the thefts. It was pretty lucky that his discovery helped clear them of suspicion, but Ion was still concerned about what was going on because cheagles are one of the symbols of the Order and he both felt it was his duty to look into it and was unable to turn a blind eye.

As the letter hadn't arrived yet, Ion went to investigate the Cheagle Woods the next day to try and learn why the monsters were stealing food. There he was attacked by wolves and had to use a Daathic fonic arte to protect himself, killing the monsters but collapsing immediately after. He was found a moment later by Luke and Tear, the same pair from the day before. He was concerned to hear that Tear, who was an Oracle Knight, had apparently tried to kill he brother Van, who was Commandant of the Oracle Knights...though he did leave that alone as Tear expressed the wish to not involve him or Luke.

Upon learning that they were all there for the same reason, Luke decided that Ion was coming with them, having already figured out that the Fon Master would go anyways, which he would have...and saying that they couldn't "just leave a guy with a face so pale he looks like he's about to die". Ion saw the kindness in the rough attitude that Luke displayed and took an immediate liking to the other boy.

Once they located the cheagles' nest, they learned that a cheagle had started a fire in the northern forest and the ligers who lived there had moved to their forest to hunt and eat them because of it...so the cheagles stole food to offer the ligers so they wouldn't be eaten. Luke wanted to turn the cheagles in to Engeve, but that would likely make the ligers attack the village for food next...an outcome Ion couldn't allow. Ion suggested they try and negotiate with the ligers, though they needed a cheagle to translate.

Mieu, the young cheagle who started the fire, was chosen and given the Sorcerer's Ring that the cheagles used to talk to humans so he could translate for the ligers. Before they left, Mieu revealed that he could breathe fire thanks to the Sorcerer's Ring and wouldn't get tired no matter how much he did...an ability that would come in handy many times, though not in battle.

The liger queen was guarding a clutch of eggs that was nearly about to hatch and didn't want to be bothered. When they tried persuading her to leave with her eggs she prepared to attack them, intending to feed them to her young. Killing her and smashing the eggs became necessary because if the eggs hatched near Engeve as they were the village would be wiped out by the hungry babies.

Ion stayed out of the way with Mieu while Luke and Tear attempted to kill the liger queen...but she was too powerful. Jade appeared then and saved them all with his powerful artes, killing the queen and destroying the eggs. As Ion was apologizing to Jade, who was disappointed with his reckless actions, it was surprisingly Luke who defended him by more or less telling Jade to lay off since Ion was apologizing.

Returning briefly to the cheagle nest to report what had happened. The cheagle elder, with input from Mieu, decided to exile Mieu from the cheagle tribe and let him serve under Luke for a year with the Sorcerer's Ring to help him be more useful. With that settled and the letter having arrived while Ion was away, they were ready to leave.

At the entrance to the forest, Jade had Luke and Tear arrested as the source of the hyperesonance two nights earlier. Ion attended the interrogation, believing Tear that the hyperesonance and their arrival in Malkuth had been accidental and, after learning that Luke was Duke fon Fabre's son and therefore had ties to the royal family, suggested to Jade that they ask for Luke's help, though they couldn't give details until Luke agreed. After everything was in order, Ion went out for some air, but the ship was attacked by the Six God-Generals of the Oracle Knights, a detachment of soldiers, and a swarm of monsters directed by Arietta the Wild. Anise caught up with Ion but was knocked from the ship trying to face some soldiers and he was captured.

Major Legretta, a God-General also known as Legretta the Quick, escorted him to the Sephiroth at Shurrey Hill to have him remove the Daathic seal blocking the entrance, which he did without much resistance simply because he didn't know that anything could be done to the Sephiroth or their Passage Rings with the Yulian and Albertesque seals protecting it...much less what was intended to be done with them, and figured it was a pretty pointless effort.

They returned to the Tartarus to find it in emergency shutdown, and Jade, Luke, and Tear attempted to catch Legretta by surprise and free Ion. They might have succeeded if Arietta hadn't made her way to the emergency hatch with the help of a liger and attacked them.

A blond man appeared and managed to get Ion and allow Jade to regain the upper hand and they were able to escape to try and seek out Anise in St. Binah, leaving the Tartarus to the Oracle Knights because the entire crew, around 140 people, had likely already been slaughtered to leave no witnesses. They couldn't flee far though, Ion collapsing in exhaustion and forcing them to stop and rest, or risk shortening his life.

Questions about the Order's motives and why Mohs would want to start a war came up, but Ion wasn't able to provide answers. Introductions went for the blond male who was revealed to be Guy Cecil, a servant of Luke's house...the group was also introduced to his phobia involving women.

Some Oracle Knights caught up to them and due to Luke's reluctance to take another's life to stay alive, Tear was wounded. So they set up camp there for the night so she could rest.

The next day, they arrived at St. Binah to find the entrance monitored by the Oracle Knights. Hearing a wagon-driver from Engeve state that a second wagon would be arriving, they backtracked to hitch a ride and sneak into the town unnoticed.

Anise had indeed made it in, but moved on when she learned that the Oracle Knights were coming, leaving behind a letter to let them know she'd gone on to Kaitzur and was protecting the letter. They then witnessed five of the six God-Generals in a small conference about their next move, Sync the Tempest ordering that they pull their troops from St. Binah and Engeve, both to avoid an incident between Malkuth and Daath and because the only way for Ion's group to get to Baticul was to go through Kaitzur.

At the inn, Ion was asked where the God Generals had taken him and why...to which he could only answer to the Sephiroth but confessed that anything beyond that was classified. Afterwards, he was left with a thoughtful Jade while everyone else went to get some rest.

Leaving St. Binah, they learned that the bridge to Akzeriuth was out and they would have to cross the Fubras River on foot to reach Kaitzur, which was actually the faster route anyway. Arietta headed them off there and Ion was unable to dissuade her from trying to kill the others because they killed her mother, the liger queen. Before she could though, an earthquake opened cracks in the ground, releasing miasma that knocked her out. Tear sang a fonic hymn to create a temporary force field to save them all...Ion recognized it as one of Yulia's fonic hymns.

When Jade would have killed Arietta where she lay, Ion asked that he spare her because she had been one of his, meaning the original Ion's, Fon Master Guardians. So they left her where the miasma wouldn't reach her and continued to Kaitzur.

In Kaitzur, they found Anise unable to cross the border because she had no passport. Luke was attacked by Asch, but saved by Van. When Tear would have attacked him, Ion persuaded her to hear him out, believing it would be foolish to ignore the chance for communication.

Van told then that while the God-Generals were under his command, he had known nothing of events in Daath beyond Ion's disappearance, meaning the God-Generals had sided with Mohs but he hadn't. They also learned that Tear may have been searching for the Seventh Fonstone from Yulia's Score for Mohs, though she wouldn't say either way. Van also provided them all with temporary passports to cross the border, leaving them to rest while he went to ready a vessel.

They reached the port without incident, only to find that Arietta had unleashed her monsters on the port, disabling their ship and kidnapping the chief engineer for Asch. She said that if Ion and Luke didn't come to Choral Castle then he'd be killed. Van told them to go back to the border until the training ship returned and take that, while he dealt with Arietta...but before they could a couple of maintenance workers asked Ion to save the engineer, who was a devout follower of the Order and whose Score said calamity would be avoided.

Ion agreed, having not wanted to ignore Arietta's demands, and the rest of the group did as well, for various reasons, so they left for Choral Castle.

Traveling through Choral Castle revealed several things related to Luke's past, not the least of which was a large fon machine that Jade appeared to recognize but wasn't ready to discuss. Eventually they spotted Arietta's liger companion and Luke and Anise giving chase...with Ion right behind asking they not hurt Arietta.

On the roof, Luke was captured by a flying monster and Anise next while covering Ion. Arietta had Anise dropped face first on the ground and when Anise complained that hurt, Arietta replied that Anise hurt her first by taking Ion from her. Ion was about to tell her why she wasn't a Fon Master Guardian anymore but the others arrived to attempt to save Luke.

Luke was whisked away by Dist and by the time they got to him, whatever the God Generals had wanted him for was done and Guy only managed to confront Sync for a moment before he escaped. Ion noticed Guy seemed bothered by something, but Guy simply told him about the fon disk he'd found, and Ion suggested letting Jade look at it later.

Before leaving, Sync mentioned that Arietta was on the roof with the engineer. She was determined to avenge the liger queen and reclaim Ion, but they defeated her and rescued the engineer. Ion once again refused to allow Jade to kill her, saying he'd take her to the Order for an inquiry instead.

Van appeared then, having come to find Ion when he hadn't heard anything about him reaching the border base. He took Arietta into custody and the engineer to escort him back, expressing the wish that Ion come with him, but Ion decided to travel back the same way Luke did.

Back at the port, Ion formally apologized to Count Almandine, the man in charge, and the group stayed overnight while the ship's repairs were finished, boarding the ferry for Chesedonia the following day.

In Chesedonia, Van left to take Arietta to be turned in and the group went to the manor of Astor, head of the Merchant's Guild, to request Guy's fon disk be analyzed. There was a slight delay when Luke had his wallet stolen by the Dark Wings, but they were otherwise unmolested and successfully got the disk translated. On the way to the port, Sync attacked Guy in an attempt to get the disk and notes and, not wanting a scene, they were forced to flee for the ship, managing to sail before the God-General caught up.

On the ship, it was revealed the data was about isofons, entities with the same fonon frequency, and Lorelei, the aggregate sentience of the Seventh Fonon...which wasn't even confirmed yet. This led into the topic of fomicry, at which point Jade hesitated a bit and Ion simply didn't contribute.

Before that conversation could get too far, the Oracle Knights attacked again to take the ship. They made their way to the bridge, where they were confronted by the God-General, Dist the Runny Reaper. After an unusual bit of arguing between him and Jade, Dist attacked and was defeated. Jade and Guy went to check the engines and Ion and the others made sure no one was hurt.

In Baticul, they were greeted by the Royal Forces, who were ready to escort them. Luke insisted on taking Ion though, which the Fon Master was grateful for.

Taking an air car to Baicul from the port, the group encountered an Oracle Knight talking to the Dark Wings. The soldier excused himself hurriedly when he saw Ion, and the Dark Wings took interest in his identity. They left without incident, but it was obvious to everyone that they were up to something.

At the castle, they interrupted Mohs in the middle of trying to convince Luke's Uncle, King Ingobert, that Malkuth was a threat. When Mohs stated he'd been looking for Ion, the Fon Master told him they would talk later before he and Jade did their duty as emissaries and Anise delivered the letter.

They were informed that the emissaries had rooms prepared, but Ion wanted to see Luke's home first. They also heard that Luke's mother had fallen ill in his absence. They visited the manor and found out that Van was suspected of involvement in Luke's disappearance and was to be arrested on his return...and likely executed. Ion made plans to issue a formal protest.

The next morning, Ion was kidnapped by the Dark Wings and escorted out of the city. The anime showed that he had been sightseeing with some castle guards and turned himself over so they wouldn't be killed, but that may not be the case in the game.

Luke's party stumbled upon Ion being led onto the Tartarus while they were sneaking out of the city and a brief fight between Luke and Asch revealed to Ion beyond a doubt that Luke was a replica, like him.

He was taken to the Zao Ruins to remove the seal on the Sephiroth there, but Luke and the others arrived to save him. In the end, he was freed in exchange for them leaving peacefully.

When they arrived in Chesedonia to continue to Kaitzur and on to Akzeriuth, Luke suffered an odd headache and Guy insisted on resting at the inn. Anise agreed because they needed to decide what should be done with Ion, but Luke began acting strangely in front of the inn and even drew his sword on Tear, saying someone was controlling him just before fainting. They moved him to the inn, and though Jade seemed to have an idea what was wrong, he didn't say.

When Luke came to, the subject quickly switched to Ion, who asked to go with them so that once the Akzeriuth rescue mission everyone was moving to do was taken care of, he could personally report it to Emperor Peony...wanting to see his responsibility through to the end.

At the consulate, they learned Van had been through and left ahead of them with a vanguard. Guy suddenly collapsed in pain and Jade discovered a curse slot on his arm after he knocked down Luke upon being approached by him. Ion explained it was a Daathic fonic arte used to control a person through their memories...but he didn't tell them it was an arte only usable by Fon Masters, or his suspicions about Sync, who was the only one who could have done it. He informed them that the power the user had over a person was affected by the distance between them and that the user had to be close so they should board a ferry quickly.

On the ferry, Guy recovered quickly, the distance gained enough to weaken its effect. In-game there's a skit between Guy and Ion as soon as they arrive in Kaitzur, in which Ion is very concerned about Guy and the curse slot, though Guy insists he need not worry.

From Kaitzur, the party moved on to Deo Pass, but Luke was strangely occupied with Van and upset everyone...except Ion, by saying they shouldn't have wasted time saving Ion because he wasn't needed since Luke was there. Things only got more frustrating for the others when Ion needed to rest and Luke was too preoccupied with catching up to Van to truly care. They did rest, but it was more than obvious that everyone was upset with Luke's behavior, though Luke didn't seem to understand why.

Legretta appeared, though she was trying to get Tear to leave with her rather than take Ion. According to her the God Generals' objective was to return free will to mankind, which had become entirely dependent on the Score. When Tear refused, Legretta attacked to stop them by force.

Luke and the others held their own and Legretta demanded Tear get away fron "that reject", meaning Luke. Jade became angry and confronted her about resurrecting fomicry and whose idea it was, though Ion asked him not to reveal too much for Luke's sake since he knew Luke didn't know that he was a replica...drawing some of Jade's ire to himself because he'd known. In the end, Legretta retreated and they continued on, though Luke demanded to know what was going on.

Akzeriuth was worse than anyone imagined, the miasma plaguing the town having caused many to simply fall ill on the streets, so most of the party began trying to help where they could, Ion included.

Having learned that Van's group had gone to Tunnel 14 to rescue trapped miners, the group followed. An Oracle soldier caught up to them outside, reporting to Tear about the Seventh Fonstone. With the possibility it had been found, Ion asked her to go investigate while he stayed with the others to aid civilians in the mine.

Deep in the mine, they found the miners with no vanguard. Luke was still looking for Van to give him guidance and didn't respond well to any of the others trying to get him to help the people. A commotion was heard outside and Jade went to investigate, leaving the group to tend to the miners. Ion followed Luke when he ventured further into the mine.

Asch apparently tried to reach Luke, though Luke ignored him, and they found Van beside a Daathic sealed door, which marked the location of a Sephroth. Van asked Ion to open the way, stating it was necessary for reviving Akzeriuth. Partly because of this, the fact that Luke also thought it necessary to go along with Van's plan, and partly because he didn't see what purpose it would serve, Ion didn't argue much against this and removed the seal.

A skit immediately after showed Ion had concerns about doing anything in the Sephiroth without waiting on the others, but Luke was perfectly fine with it just being Van, stating he was about to save Akzeriuth, though he didn't say how. Ion's concerns weren't eased, but he said no more.

At the Passage Ring inside the Sephiroth, Van told Luke to go neutralize the miasma by using his hyperresonance on the Passage Ring, something Ion again wasn't sure of. While Luke was concentrating, Van somehow forced him to unleash all of his power, the resulting energy blasting Ion and Mieu into a wall and knocking them out and destroying the Passage Ring at the same time.

He was unconscious as everything began to collapse

□ Personality:
Ion is usually extremely docile, even seeming to be a little out of it at times...to the point that he is more often than not following rather than leading. He's kind, quiet, and very innocent, able to look through the negative qualities of a person and spot things others may miss like kindness or loneliness...unfortunately this doesn't work for the opposite and this combined with his trusting nature can land him in trouble. Naivete is not to be confused with stupidity though as even Jade Curtiss, one of the most intelligent and perceptive characters in the canon, has noted that Ion is very intelligent and has a tendency to at least seriously consider, if not just follow, his advice. Though he can and does keep secrets, one thing he doesn't do is lie.

Despite his position and high intelligence, Ion is not in any way arrogant or spoiled, instead being very modest and well-aware of most of his shortcomings. He knows his existence is a mask for his original's death and that the respect and influence he has is mostly due to the position he's filling. He is acutely aware of his physical weakness and tries not to let it slow others down, pushing his limits without protest and with little regard for himself when he feels there are more important things at stake. When he has caused others any sort of inconvenience he is quick to own up to it and apologize, as well as make amends where possible...this is also true of perceived trouble caused too. He also seems to think himself easily replaceable as a person.

Although he's not usually reckless, Ion is not above going by himself to look into problems he feels it's his responsibility to handle, sometimes without letting anyone else know what he's up to. Any true thoughtlessness he shows is extremely rare and is usually involving him trying to look out for someone else's well-being. Despite his mellow nature, Ion is quite capable of both standing up for himself and pushing his authority when he needs to, though this is the only time he'll do such a thing. His age, innocence, and frailty hide a strong will and general lack of fear...though the lack of fear is most likely at least partly due to lack of experience where that's concerned. He's been kidnapped and attacked by monsters, but never been seriously hurt or in any true danger.

Patient and very tolerant of others, Ion is usually not all that vocal in a group, preferring to quietly enjoy company and only chiming into conversation occasionally. He's not been shown being angry, though he's shown to disapprove when others continue to press things there is little point in continuing on, especially when it's putting down a person who is trying to make amends. In serious situations his speaking up is usually a time when others should listen since he has something important to say.

Most likely because he is such a young replica, created only about three years ago, he has no mannerisms, nervous twitches, or tendencies to gesture unless for a specific reason. Despite his young age, he is mentally and physically between 14 and 15 years old, but has no memories from before his creation. This fact means that he is not and cannot ever actually be the person he is a replica of.

□ Age: 14-15
□ Gender: Male
□ Appearance:
Ion is a pale young man standing at about 5'2" with an extremely pale complexion and thin, fragile build. He has green hair that has two chest-length locks in the front and is short in the back, and large green eyes. He wears a white, thigh-length robe and white tights with sandals, and a gold necklace shaped a bit like a tuning fork. His hair has a white head band and two hair tubes.

□ Abilities/Powers:
As a replica of the Fon Master, Ion has a lot of abilities at his disposal...but only a few a known/mentioned/shown. Among these are the ability to read the Score, and the ability to break and create Daathic seals. He is fluent in Ancient Ispanian and has the ability to draw fonons from a person's body into his own. Because he is a Seventh Fonist, he is also able to use some healing artes.

Curse Slots: A seal placed on a person that allows the user to manipulate a person using their memories. It can't fully control a person though or make them react in a way that's unrelated to the memory. (e.g. When Sync used the Curse Slot to make Guy attack Luke, it would have failed if Guy hadn't ever been at the point where he'd hated Luke enough to kill him.) Ion can both use and remove a Curse Slot. The closer he is to the affected person, the stronger his control is.

Akashic Torment: Ion kneels and creates a glyph that spreads a set distance around him and releases a blast of energy that damages anything caught inside the glyph. Damage is also dealt as he's charging the energy directly after the glyph is made.

Because of his frailness, using any of his special abilities leaves him fatigued, though the level depends on which ability and what he did beforehand. Constant use could shorten his life, as could consistently pushing himself physically. Should he die, the fonons that make up his body will separate and he'll disappear.

□ Personal Items:
Aside from his outfit he only carries a staff that has the same tuning fork shape as his necklace.

Background:
Here.

Pokemon: Eevee. Defining traits will be pale fur, green eyes, and he still has his necklace.

The reasoning behind this is that Eevee are Pokemon who change and grow one of several ways, rather than most which only have a single path. It's a physical representation of the fact that he believes the Score is only one possible outcome.

Personality Test
1. Have you ever blurted something out without thinking about the consequences first? Yes, once I did by mistake.
2. Your friend has made a meal that tastes terrible. They ask, "How is it?" You say...? I couldn't lie to them, but I would try to tell them in a way that wouldn't offend or hurt them.
3. You fail miserably! Everyone found out, and they're disappointed in you... What do you do? The only thing would be to try to do anything in my power to make amends for my failure.
4. The phone's ringing! What do you do? Answer it if no one else can do so before me.
5. Do you think that, no matter what, life goes on? Yes, I do.

Sample RP: Ion was adjusting to his new body well enough, the short limbs not as odd for him as it maybe would be for others...or the tail and lack of opposable thumbs. But the days spent in the guild were passing as he went about his training, usually at the Dojo or the Beach Cave. Today however, he was on an errand for the guildmasters.

Running into town on all fours, he stopped at the bank. Pulling his treasure bag around to the front so he could dig inside for the letter containing the amount he was supposed to withdraw for shopping, he smiled in greeting at the Tyranitar. The big Pokemon didn't scare him, because he'd seen that he was easy to get along with as long as you weren't a troublemaker or thief.
